  20. This Read-Me file contains the correct procedure for installing and running
  21. Anarchy Online on your system.  It also contains a list of Frequently 
  22. Asked Questions with answers.

  27. Installation procedure:
  28.  
  29.  
  30. >From CD
  31. 1a. Insert CD 1 in the CD/DVD-ROM drive. With auto-run enabled the
  32. installation process starts automatically.
  33. 1b. If auto-run is disabled, locate CD 1 in Windows Explorer and double
  34. click setup.exe
  35. 2. In the installer, click NEXT
  36. 3. You will be prompted to accept the License Agreement. Click YES to
  37. accept.
  38. 4. The installer will automatically make a search for a current version
  39. of Anarchy Online on your computer. If found, click NEXT to install
  40. Anarchy Online including Shadowlands to the same folder as your current
  41. installation. None of your settings for Anarchy Online, like custom
  42. skins and maps, will be overwritten.
  43. If you do not want the installation in the same folder, click
  44. BROWSE to select a different folder.
  45. 5. If you do not have Anarchy Online installed on your computer the
  46. installer will suggest a folder for you. If you wish to change it, do so
  47. before clicking NEXT.
  48. 6. A summary of your installation will be displayed, click NEXT to
  49. accept, the installation is carried out.
  50.  
  51. DirectX8 or higher is required. If you do not have DirectX8 or higher
  52. installed on your computer, you will find a separate installer on the
  53. Anarchy Online CD.
  54.  
  55. >From download
  56. Double-click on the downloaded zip archive and choose extract. Place the 
  57. files in a folder of your choice. Then open that folder and double-click 
  58. on the file called setup.exe to start the installation process.
  59.  
  60. Step through the installation by clicking the button labelled Next until 
  61. you are asked to decide where you want to install the game. The 
  62. installation will scan your hard drives for a Games folder to install 
  63. into, for example "C:\Games\Funcom\Anarchy Online", if nothing else is 
  64. specified. You can change these settings by selecting a different target 
  65. folder, for example Program Files. Click Next to continue.
  66.  
  67. When the installation is finished and you have made shortcuts to the game 
  68. in the Start Menu (if desirable), you will need to register an account.  
  69. Make sure to start the game and read the End User License Agreement 
  70. before 
  71. registering.

  74. 4.    Patching
  75. ==================================
  76.  
  77. Patching is normally done automatically when you start Anarchy Online. If 
  78. your client is not of the latest version, the automatic patching will 
  79. start as soon as you press Login on the login screen (even with blank 
  80. username and password fields). Note that if you need to patch it will say 
  81. so in the Dimension pull-down menu. Also, the version numbers for your 
  82. local client software and the remote version (on the servers) are always 
  83. listed at the top of the launcher window.
  84.  
  85. If you experience trouble with the automatic patching, please use the 
  86. manual patch procedure below.

  88. Manual patch procedure:
  89.  
  90. -Download the patch(es) you need. These can always be found on the 
  91. patches 
  92. page on the official site 
  93. (http://www.anarchy-online.com/content/downloads/patches/). 
  94. Please make sure to save the patches in a folder you won't delete by 
  95. accident, 
  96. in case you need them again, as some of them are very large and take a 
  97. while 
  98. to download.
  99. -Run the patches one by one by double clicking the patch file. Follow the 
  100. instructions you get; choose the correct folder where you installed Anarchy 
  101. Online (usually C:\Program Files\Funcom\Anarchy Online) and choose yes 
  102. if 
  103. prompted whether you want to overwrite files or not. Make absolutely sure 
  104. that you are patching in the correct order.
  105.  
  106. Between each patch, if you are doing several, make sure that you hit "I 
  107. Accept" on the EULA, as some files will be renamed after you do this. 
  108. Failing to do this might lead to missing or outdated files. If you should 
  109. hit "I Decline" by mistake, running that particular patch all over again 
  110. will fix the problem.

  112. Do not hit "login" on the login screen unless you want to start the 
  113. automatic patching.

  115. 5.    Registering an account
  116. ==================================
  117.  
  118. Registration procedure:
  119.  
  120. You can register by starting Anarchy Online (click the Anarchy Online 
  121. shortcut under your Start Menu) and clicking the Account button in the 
  122. startup dialogue, or by connecting to the Internet at 
  123. <https://register.funcom.com>. Make sure to start the game and read the 
  124. End User Licence Agreement before registering.
  125.  
  126. Choose Create a new account.
  127. Enter a username, password, and a valid e-mail address. Enter the serial 
  128. number printed on your game CD to create a new account. 
  129.  
  130. You will be asked to submit your credit card and payment details. 
  131. Your credit card will not be charged until the month included in the licence 
  132. is up.After you have entered the serial number printed on your game CD, 
  133. you 
  134. need to select a billing plan: Monthly, quarterly, or twice-annually. You 
  135. will receive a discount if you sign up for the extended billing plans.
  136. Fill in your credit card details. All transactions are secure, and your 
  137. billing details will only be used for the specified charges. Your 
  138. subscription will be renewed automatically at the end of the specified 
  139. period unless you choose to cancel your account. The first month is 
  140. included in the game licence, and if you choose to cancel your account 
  141. before the first month is up, your credit card will not be charged.
  142.  
  143. Review and confirm the details.
  144. Please take a few minutes to fill out your personal profile. This is 
  145. optional, but it helps us provide you with better service in the future.
  146. You are finally ready to enter the world of Rubi-Ka! Sign on using your 
  147. username and password as specified in the registration, and click Play!
  148.  
  149. The Shadowlands
  150.  
  151. In order to access Shadowlands you will need to log into an active
  152. Anarchy Online account at https://register.funcom.com and register your
  153. Shadowlands key.
  154.  
  155. The Shadowlands key below activates Shadowlands. Every key is exclusive
  156. to the account it is registered to, and can only be used once. If the
  157. seal of your box is broken, the key is considered used and the box
  158. cannot be re-sold.
  159.  
  160. With the Shadowlands expansion you will also get access to the features
  161. of the Anarchy Online Booster Pack, The Notum Wars.
  162.  
  163. 6.    Starting the game
  164. ==================================
  165.  
  166. Every time you run Anarchy Online, you need to log in with your chosen 
  167. username and password. If you have already registered, you need to use the 
  168. name and password you entered in the registration process. If you have not 
  169. registered, please do so now. You can choose to save the password and 
  170. make 
  171. it easier and quicker to log in the next time; to do so, check the 
  172. "Remember Password" box.
  173.  
  174. The login screen contains important information about the current version 
  175. of the game, as well as special announcements. You may want to spend a 
  176. few 
  177. minutes looking through the messages before clicking the Login button.
  178.  
  179. You can now create a new character, or continue playing a character that 
  180. you have already created. You can also delete a character - just keep in 
  181. mind that deleting a character is permanent. Before you move on, please 
  182. make sure that you have selected the correct display driver and 
  183. preferences by pressing the green button with a picture of a video card to 
  184. the far right under Hardware Setup.
  185.  
  186. Select an appropriate screen resolution and, if you have more than one 
  187. video card installed, the video card you want to use. You can also choose 
  188. to run Anarchy Online in a window, by checking the "Run in window" box. 
  189. This may affect game performance. To play the introductory movie 
  190. before the game starts, check the "Play introductory movie" box. Press 
  191. Play when you are ready to proceed.

  193. 7.    Character creation
  194. ==================================
  195.  
  196. After successfully logging into Anarchy Online for the first time you need 
  197. to create a new character. This character is your alter ego on Rubi-Ka. As 
  198. a blank "human" template, you will automatically enter a room where you 
  199. can visually customize the character you want to play. You can choose your 
  200. breed, appearance, body-fat ratio and height, profession, nick-name, 
  201. random full name and, finally, which side of the conflict you want to be 
  202. on.

  204. Left clicking on any of the question mark boxes found in the training 
  205. areas, will provide you with audio instructions. Holding down the shift 
  206. button and left clicking any object will provide you with an information 
  207. window about the object.

  209.  
  210. First Stage - Select Breed
  211. --------------------------
  212. There are four different breeds to choose from - three of them have both 
  213. male and female forms, while one is androgynous. The breeds are 
  214. represented on the seven separate templates in front of you. Choose a 
  215. breed by left-clicking one of the templates, or investigate a breed by 
  216. holding the cursor over one of the templates.
  217.  
  218. After selecting your breed, your character will be transformed into his or 
  219. her new shape. If you are unhappy with your choice, simply select another 
  220. breed by left-clicking the relevant template. When you have made your final 
  221. choice, left-click the next button in the down right corner of your screen. 
  222. You will now continue to the character creation process.

  224. Second Stage - Select Size, Body Type, and Face
  225. -----------------------------------------------
  226. Your physical appearance is determined by three factors; Facial 
  227. Appearance, 
  228. Body Shape and Height.
  229.  
  230. Begin by choosing a facial appearance. Cycle through the different choices 
  231. by left-clicking the two buttons above your character. 
  232.  
  233. To the right on your screen there are three buttons that determine your 
  234. height, and three that determine your weight. Adjust these till you are happy 
  235. with the looks of your avatar.
  236.  
  237. Once you have finalized your character's physical appearance, left-click the 
  238. next button in the down right corner of your screen. You can always go back 
  239. to the previous step of the character creation process, though it will not reset 
  240. any of your choices.
  241.  
  242. Third Stage - Selecting a Profession
  243. ------------------------------------
  244. The twelve boxes on your right represent the twelve different 
  245. professions available on Rubi-Ka. 
  246.  
  247. For indepth information please read the game manual 
  248.  
  249. Investigate a profession by holding the cursor over the relevant box. Select a 
  250. profession by left-clicking it. As long 
  251. as you stay in this room, you can change your profession as many times as 
  252. you wish, and you can also jump back to previous rooms to modify your 
  253. appearance and breed. When you are pleased with your choice, left-click the 
  254. next button in the down right corner of your screen.
  255.  
  256. Profession alternatives:
  257. Agent
  258. Keeps a low profile to gather information or liquidate unwanted elements 
  259. through technological means and concealment.
  260.  
  261. Doctor
  262. Healing the forces while they fight for their respective cause using both 
  263. nano and more regular healing skills. Normally evades any form of combat, 
  264. but able to defend him/herself if cornered.
  265.  
  266. Enforcer
  267. Mixing the brute force of the soldier with the cunning and calculation of 
  268. the thief, the enforcer is always in high demand when total ruthlessness 
  269. is the last resort.
  270.  
  271. Engineer
  272. They control, repair and manipulate equipment in a world where technology 
  273. is dominant. Robot pets and electronics are their speciality, but they are 
  274. also able to handle a certain amount of nano-technology.
  275.  
  276. Bureaucrat
  277. Though not very adept at direct combat, he uses his theoretical and 
  278. manipulative superiority to get his way within the vast bureaucratic 
  279. channels on the planet.
  280.  
  281. Adventurer
  282. Prefers the quietness and excitement of nature to the hectic hustle and 
  283. bustle of big city life. Needs cunning and a wide range of knowledge and 
  284. expertise to survive the most arduous of existences.
  285.  
  286. Meta Physicist
  287. Not satisfied that the world has reached its scientific zenith, and 
  288. questions whether everything is explicable by science. Devotes a lot of 
  289. time on spiritual matters in trying to explain some of the phenomena in 
  290. society.
  291.  
  292. Nano Technician
  293. Direct nano technology is their game, and they are easily recognisable 
  294. from the ever-present cloud of nano-bots surrounding their person. 
  295. Scientific geniuses that make the more advanced nano technology seem so 
  296. easy, that other people conceive it as magic.
  297.  
  298. Trader
  299. Likes the monetary opportunities in the big cities and prefer to utilise 
  300. their capitalistic talents to get ahead in the world rather than engage in 
  301. direct combat.
  302.  
  303. Fixer
  304. Operates on the edge of the law, acquiring anything on demand if the price 
  305. is right, and works as an intermediary in the underworld of Rubi- Ka.
  306.  
  307. Soldier
  308. Adept fighters and loyal servants of whichever cause they believe in. 
  309. Operates as guards, patrolmen and warriors.
  310.  
  311. Martial Artist
  312. Questions whether constant development and technical advancement is the 
  313. true route to happiness, and seeks an alternative in a more spiritual life 
  314. to balance the eternal strife for progress that dominates the planet.
  315.  
  316. Keeper
  317. The Keeper is a fighter that radiates valour and heroism - a beacon of light 
  318. and hope to the team. A formidable opponent who specialises in close 
  319. combat, the Keeper is especially proficient wielding two-handed edged 
  320. weapons. This profession's uniqueness lies in the ability to share life and 
  321. diverse powers with nearby allies. As a genetically engineered profession 
  322. dependent on an abundance of notum, the Keeper must begin life in the Jobe 
  323. research facilities in the Shadowlands.
  324.  
  325. Shade
  326. The Shade is a mix between a predator and a parasite. Dark and aggressive, 
  327. the Shade sucks the life and energy out of opponents, robbing them of the 
  328. basic elements they need to subsist. The Shade stays out of harm's way by 
  329. relying on concealment and good combat mobility. Shades can't wear any 
  330. armour, but have nanotechnologiacally enhanced tattoos grafted into their 
  331. skin to give them some protection. As a genetically engineered profession 
  332. dependent on an abundance of notum, a Shade must begin life in the Jobe 
  333. research facilities in the Shadowlands.

  335. Fourth Stage - Name your character
  336. ----------------------------------
  337. Here you choose your name on Rubi-Ka. You can either type in a name of 
  338. your choice, or hit the suggest button for a random one. Please note that not 
  339. all names will be accepted, they might already be taken by another 
  340. character. 
  341. When you have named your character, left-click the next button to proceed 
  342. to the Arriwal Hall.

  344. Fifth Stage - Selecting your standing in the conflict
  345. -----------------------------------------------------
  346. The moment of truth has arrived: Will you be a member of a Clan, stay 
  347. Neutral, or sign up with Omni-Tek? Make your choice by walking through 
  348. one 
  349. of the three doors in front of you.
  350.  
  351. Your choice of affiliation will also decide your starting location:
  352.  
  353. Neutral - If you decide to stay neutral, your chosen door will take you to 
  354. Newland City or Borealis.
  355.  
  356. Clan - A clan-affiliated character will be transported to Tir , Old Athen 
  357. or Athen West.
  358.  
  359. Omni-Tek - An Omni-Tek employee will emerge in Omni-1 entertainment 
  360. district, Omni-1 trade district , Rome blue district or Rome green 
  361. district.
  362.  
  363. Jobe - You will be taken to the training ground in Nascence, and choose 
  364. your alignment at a later time. 
  365.  
  366. Familiarize yourself with all the alternatives - both affiliation and 
  367. starting location - before going any further. This manual contains 
  368. information that should help you make a considered and responsible choice.

  370. Congratulations! You have created a new character, and you are now a 
  371. Rubi-Ka citizen. An entire world lies at your feet! Well, actually, to 
  372. begin with, the training grounds, your backyard and your apartment. To 
  373. exit those areas, the Advisors of Rubi Ka demand, for your own safety, 
  374. that you first have either reached level 2, or have gathered 1000 credits. 
  375. Before you get access to the cities, this is where you can buy startup 
  376. equipment, take on a mission, or just hang out and chat with other 
  377. newcomers.

  416. BASIC TROUBLESHOOTING
  417.  
  418. Q: When patching I get this error message:  Query Info failed (12150)?
  419. A: This usually happens on computers running Windows 95 and Microsoft 
  420. Internet Explorer 3.X or older.  We suggest that you upgrade your Internet 
  421. Explorer browser to 4.X or newer. 
  422.  
  423. Q: I install Anarchy Online and get a 'dll' error when I try to start the 
  424. game.  Are there any solutions? 
  425. A: If you are using Win95, start the winsock file on the CD that is called
  426.  W95ws2setup.  The game should now start. 
  427.  
  428. Q: Why don't I hear any sounds in the game? 
  429. A: Try the following suggestions:
  430. 1) If you do not hear any sounds, choose Opt -> Sound Options in the 
  431. Anarchy Online client.  Be sure that the sound checkbox is selected (a 
  432. checkmark is present).  Turn the master volume up.
  433. 2) Make sure you have the latest version of DirectX installed as well as 
  434. the latest drivers for your sound card.
  435.  
  436. Q: I have problems with the graphics.  They seem messed up. What should I 
  437. do?
  438. A: Here are some things that could help:
  439. 1) Install the latest drivers for your video card. A list of supported 
  440. drivers can be found at

  443. 2) Choose a lower resolution.
  444. 3) Check to be sure you have installed the latest version of DirectX.

  446. CONNECTING, PATCHING AND LOGGING IN
  447.  
  448. Q: How am I able to get through a firewall?
  449. A: This depends on the policy of your network department concerning 
  450. security and what kind of traffic they want.
  451.  
  452. Anarchy Online should work fine if the firewall lets you open connections 
  453. from inside the firewall. If this isn't possible, you will have to bring 
  454. up this issue with the department responsible for the firewall. 
  455.  
  456. These are the ports that should be opened on your network if you are 
  457. playing Anarchy Online: 80, 7500 - 7504 and 7012
  458.  
  459. Q: Why do I get a 'dimension not available' or 'could not connect to login-
  460. handler' error message?
  461. A: The reason could be that you are playing behind a fire wall. Please see 
  462. the question above about this. This could also be caused by server 
  463. downtime (scheduled or unscheduled). Check to see if the server(s)is/are 
  464. down.
  465.  
  466. Q: Before patching I get the error message 'dimension file does not 
  467. correctly reflect the server version'. What could I do?
  468. A: A web cache or proxy most probably causes this. The list of dimensions 
  469. and the version each dimension runs is downloaded from a web server 
  470. whenever Anarchy Online starts. If this file is old because it got cached 
  471. somewhere between you and our servers, the game will find that the 
  472. dimension file says something else than the server itself (which will 
  473. always give the proper version number when asked).

  475. To manually remedy this, open your web browser and go to this URL: 
  476. http://dimensions.anarchy-online.com/live-dimensions/dimensions.txt This 
  477. is the dimension file Anarchy Online downloads on Startup. If the version 
  478. is not reflecting the remote version shown in the Anarchy Online launcher, 
  479. you must force your web browser to do a reload from our web server. In 
  480. Internet Explorer, holding CTRL while clicking on reload does this. In 
  481. Netscape you must hold SHIFT while clicking reload. After that, you should 
  482. see the correct file.

  484. Q: I am unable to login. 
  485. A: First, check the Anarchy Online web site, 
  486. <http://www.anarchy-online.com> for more troubleshooting information, 
  487. or to check for server downtime.  If the information on the community site 
  488. doesn't help, contact <support@anarchy-online.com>.

  498. A: We are always looking for dedicated individuals with thorough 
  499. knowledge

  506. A: Please contact Support using the feedback form on the Anarchy

  508. detailed description of the bug you've found, as well as information about 
  509. your computer including what Operating System, video and sound card 
  510. you're 
  511. using.  Also, include your account login name, your character name, your 
  512. character's location at the time the bug was discovered and what time 
  513. (real-time) the bug was discovered.
